I don't really do new year's resolutions (I'm much more content to spread my random bursts of short-lived self-improvement energy throughout the year), but sometimes it's nice to take the new year as a chance to remind myself about things I want to achieve.

So, for writing:
  • My general goal: to maintain a habit of regular writing. Doesn't have to be as often as every day, just has to be something I can keep up for more than a month at a time - most recently, I've been trying to make Friday my writing day each week.
  • A specific challenge: I have just heard about the new 100 Day Writing Challenge from Tim Clare. Since I really enjoyed his Couch-to-80K and his Weekly Writing Workout, I'm going to have a go at this one, too, starting tomorrow.
  • A specific project goal: I want to finish a first draft of the fantasy novel I've been playing with this year. I don't have a specific wordcount aim for that, I just want it to be something that feels like (at least the bones of) a complete story.
I'm also considering trying to put out more short works, to build up momentum even while I work through the longer project. A friend of mine has said he's aiming to put out a 1000-word-or-more piece of writing (any kind, including documentation for other projects as well as fiction or essays etc) each month this year. This feels a lot more achievable than some other things I've tried in the past (RIP the story-a-week idea), so I might give it a go, or adapt it to my own pace.
